Kathy is widowed and is the mother of two sons. Her introduction to the world of Hospice began in 1997 when she joined Stellenbosch Hospice as a Board Member and Treasurer.
Kathy Henning has 37 years experience in the accounting field. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1995, she became a partner in an audit firm. During her time in the accounting practice, HPCA became her client and she acted as financial consultant to the organization until being appointed as the HPCA Financial Manager and Pepfar Program Manager in March 2006.

Mervyan joins the HPCA from Namibia, where she was born and raised, to take up tenure as the National Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Manager. She is a proficient M&E Professional with expertise in the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of five (5) Global Fund grants for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Other expertise within the HIV/AIDS arena includes tenure with the National Organisation for PLHIV in Namibia.
Mervyan is a graduate of the University of Oxford and possess two (2) Masters degrees in Management Research (2005) and Evidenced-based Social Work (2006) from Oxford. She also holds an undergraduate degree in Accounting from the University of Namibia (UNAM) and qualifications in Monitoring and Evaluation from the University of Pretoria. Mervyan has received several accolades including a Rhodes scholarship, academic colours, bursaries and awards.
She enjoys active pursuit and participation in community/charitable organisations. Mervyan had been involved as a volunteer for a couple of children’s projects, Editorial Board member of several community newsletters and co-founder of a women’s rotating finance scheme. She also acts as a Committee Member for the Rhodes Scholarship Selection Panel for Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and Swaziland, is a mentee on the Katuka Mentorship Programme and participated in the 44th Annual International Achievement Summit. Mervyan is passionate about ballroom- and latin dancing. Other hobbies and interests include theatre, cycling, chess, table tennis, reading, African politics and learning French.

Callen Hodgskiss is a 31 year-old financial professional who has recently become a father.
After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, he worked for the Guardian Media Group in London. He then returned to South Africa and has been involved in various NGO and Development activities: initially managing KPMG South Africa’s Corporate Social Investment portfolio; and later as Business Development Manager for Digital Links South Africa.
He also co-founded Africa++ an enterprise cultivating social entrepreneurship in Africa. While at KPMG he was awarded the KPMG Africa Chairman’s Award for his efforts to uplift communities.
He is an avid road runner; enjoys the creative arts; and has a passion for social development and has completed the course work component of Masters in Development Studies.

Liz Gwyther was born in Zimbabwe and studied medicine at the University of Cape Town graduating in 1979 with MB ChB.
She worked as a GP in Zimbabwe and South Africa and qualified as Family Physician (FCFP) in 1993. She started in hospice care on a voluntary basis in 1993 and obtained the Diploma in Palliative Medicine from University of Wales, College of Medicine(UWCM) in 1998 and the MSc in Palliative Medicine (UWCM) in 2003. She is active in palliative care training and education, in hospice development programmes and is working with W Cape Dept of Health on integration of palliative care into the formal health care sector. She is CEO of Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa (HPCA), a director of the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care(IAHPC) and a member of the WorldWide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA) steering committee, leading the education and training group of WPCA and a director of the Pain Society of South Africa.
She is a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town where she heads the Palliative Care Unit within the School of Public Health and Family Medicine. She is the convener for the postgraduate programmes in Palliative Medicine. Her special interests are women's health and palliative care (in particular palliative care in HIV/AIDS) and human rights in health care.
She has 2 children both studying in Cape Town in 2007 - Kate (22) studying psychology and Andrew (20) studying conservation ecology. She is a member of the W Province Ladies Supporters of Cricket and enjoys sailing, theatre and reading both fiction and non-fiction.

Jo became involved with hospice in 1994 when the St Luke's Hospice Board commissioned him to conduct strategic planning research resulting in a significant restructuring of St Luke's. In 1997 the HPCA Board commissioned Jo to conduct strategic planning research on the structure, functions and financial resources of HPCA. The resulting recommendations put HPCA firmly on a development oriented trajectory supported by the formation of several Hospice Development Sub-committees and a Hospice Development Fund to support the development of member hospices.
Jo serves as strategic advisor to the HPCA Board and Management and was recently appointed Company Secretary.
Jo is currently as Manager of a national higher education development initiative of JET Education Services.

Andre Wagner BA (Hon) Human Resource Mgt, BA (Hon) Human Resource Devt. from Cape Town, South Africa worked in local government as Director Of Disaster Management, before he became involved in Hospice work ten years ago.
In 2000, Andre became the convenor of the Hospice Palliative Care Association (HPCA) of South Africa's organisational development subcommittee, and is now the HPCA's Organisational Development Coordinator and chairperson of the Hospice Association of the Western Cape.
He has been managing the organisational development function for the African Palliative Care Association since 2005.
In a part time capacity he leads the management committee and is on the board of Helderberg Hospice of Helderberg Hospice.
He is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Development Studies at the University of the Western Cape doing a thesis on adapted Palliative Care models for the African Setting.

Kath Defilippi is a Registered Nurse and Midwife with Higher Diplomas in Nursing Education and Community Nursing Science.
She started the South Coast Hospice home care programme in KwaZulu-Natal in 1983 and initiated Integrated Community-based Home Care (ICHC), a model which the national association adopted and actively promotes.
She served on the HPCA board for many years and was the inaugural chair and now serves on the board of the African Palliative Care Association (APCA). As convener of the erstwhile interdisciplinary HPCA Patient Care and Education sub-committee she co-ordinated the development of the certificate course in palliative nursing care as well as the development of clinical standards and was instrumental in introducing the concept of mentorship.
She now shares the HPCA Patient Care Services Manager post with Sue Cameron. Together they are responsible for the comprehensive HPCA accreditation programme which is actively linked to mentorship. They sourced funding from the Canadian International Development (CIDA) agency and manage the CIDA project which is directly supporting 50 member hospices. They are also responsible for a pilot project that is expanding the mentorship concept to include the provision of professional supervision of community caregivers in non-hospice community-based home-care organizations in the Eastern Cape.
On the 20th March 2009, at a special event in London, Kath was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Journal of Palliative Nursing Awards. The award was in recognition of her significant contribution to the field of Palliative Care.

Nkosazana has 21 years experience in both clinical, development and social work education in a variety of settings from child welfare, disability, employee wellness programme as well as Social Work student supervision at university level.
She started being involved in palliative care in October 1996 at Highway hospice.
She was appointed by HPCA as a part time Hospice Mentor in 2005 and subsequently the vice chairperson for the Education and Research Portfolio in 2006.
She is currently the National Education and Research Manager since November 2006.

I grew up in Cape Town where I did my initial qualification in teaching and met and married David who was then a medical student.
We lived at a rural hospital for 6 years where we were involved in building a day care centre and running a feeding programme for many of the local creches.
I started as a volunteer at Sungardens Hospice in Pretoria in 1985 and eventually ran the Centre for Palliative Learning.
Accepted a full time position as HPCA Patient Services Co-ordinator in 2005.
My particular areas of responsibility are the mentorship and accreditation programme, the Canandian International Development Agency-funded programme to strengthen home care in 52 HPCA member hospices and facilitate palliative learning in primary health care clinics and the Elton John AIDS Foundation-funded pilot programme in East London which looks at providing professional palliative care expertise to four community based home care programmes.
I have three daughters, two living in the UK, and 2 grandchildren. My hobbies are reading and gardening.
ZODWA SITHOLE - Advocacy

Zodwa Sithole was born in South Africa. She was educated at Sebokeng nursing college where she gained a diploma in nursing, and at the University of South Africa where she completed a degree in nursing.
Zodwa formally trained in various areas such as primary health, nursing administration and education, community health, midwifery, general nursing and Palliative Care. She is now on the masters program with Durban University of Technology.
She has worked in the health sector for a total period of 27 years, in various disciples including general nursing, midwifery, community health, Palliative Care etc.
She gained Experience in various institutions comprising private, government and community. She functioned in environments of limited resources, illiteracy, abject poverty and general deprivation, hence a diverse content of first and third world care.
In later practice, she developed a passion for care of the frail and the terminally ill, hence the furtherance of understanding of the less understood discipline of palliative care.
She is born in a family of three brothers and four sisters, married with two young daughters.
She has participated in a number of national and international conferences, flying the hospice flag in the specific area of palliative care and lately nurse prescribing morphine. Presently she is working at HPCA as the advocacy manager.
MISSION STATEMENT
To Promote quality in life, dignity in death and support in bereavement for all living with a life-threatening illness by supporting member hospices and partner organisations.
