The Hospice and Palliative Care Association (HPCA) and the Department of Defence (DOD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to implement a palliative care programme at St Luke’s Hospice in Kenilworth on Wednesday 29 June 2010. Dr Liz Gwyther, CEO of HPCA, and Major General Lifeni Make of DOD described the partnership between government and the private sector as “a dream come true”, as end-of-life issues are a key priority for the DOD. This collaboration will ensure that compassionate, palliative care will be provided to all members of the DOD and their dependents. It will be realised by training and mentorship of the health care providers and caregivers within the DOD. The partnership also seeks to address the effectiveness and efficient referral of patients to palliative care providers when they are discharged, and sharing of relevant information in order to maximise the effectiveness of any combined efforts. MISSION STATEMENT
To Promote quality in life, dignity in death and support in bereavement for all living with a life-threatening illness by supporting member hospices and partner organisations.
PATIENT CARE & TUBERCULOSIS
Tuberculosis is a curable disease but sadly in South Africa it is a leading cause of death in people who are co-infected with HIV. The member organisations of the Hospice Palliative Care Association (HPCA) provide care and support to large numbers of people living with HIV and are ideally placed to make a significant contribution towards addressing the TB crisis in our country.
